The Goodnight Trail System, 1866-1885
The name Oliver Loving, Charles Goodnight’s initial partner, is not included in this map’s title because Loving was killed in the first drive north out of Texas. This map shows the initial route and the additional cattle routes created by Goodnight after the death of his partner.
This map is referenced and explained in our second book, The Western Cattle Trail, 1874-1897, Its Rise, Collapse, and Revival.

The Goodnight Trail System, 1866-1885
Poster-size -24” x 36” printed on heavier paper; rolled and shipped in a tube.
Unlike the State maps, a cattle trail system map shows the entire network of various trails
—branches, splinter routes, off shoots—that stem from a trunk line originating in Texas.
As circumstances changed through the years, drovers created new branches but the trunk line stayed the same.
